American Idle

May 22, 2008

That wasn’t a misspelling, it was a witty play-on-words, because “Idol” is now “idle.” It all ended last night with David Cook ruining his eye-liner with tears of joy for beating out Tickle Me Elmo Archuleta in this years season finale. The highlight of the show (which was 2 hours long and I watched in DVR fast forward in 5 minutes), was the return of Asian Liberache Guy singing his hit “I am Your Brother” with the USC Marching Band. Brilliant.

I love…

May 21, 2008

I love soccer. But I also love English soccer announcers and people who write live game commentaries. Bummer Man U won the UEFA Champions League, but it was a great game and I always like being the only white guy in the bar watching the soccer game with the cooks. How appropriate that Drogba’s last act in Chelsea blue was to get sent off for pimp-slapping Vicic?

Evidence #7,452: The NBA is Fixed

May 19, 2008

Last year, Commish David Stern explained to us all that “any player who leaves the vicinity of the bench during an altercation will be suspended one game.” Stupid rule, but fine. Because of it, the Suns lost 2 key players for a key game in a playoff series and the San Antonio Sterns went on to win an undeserving series.

I am over it.

But now, the EXACT same situation presents itself and NO ONE is suspended? Oh wait, thats because this time, the players who left the “vicinity of the bench” happened to be key players on the Boston Celtics who Stern desperately wants to face off against the Lakers in what could be the most lucrative NBA Finals in history. That makes sense… why am I surprised? I guess I am more surprised that intelligent people still don’t believe this and I am still having to explain it.

C. J. Bergmen: Sons and Daughters

May 18, 2008

This isn’t as much a “review” as it is a way for me to process this album. I don’t expect anybody really reads or cares about my opinion on music, but it is a venue for me, a lover of music.

Like most things, I am ADD in my music rotation. Typically, I will listen to one album exclusively (or song in the case of Chamillionaires Ridin’ Dirty) for about 2 weeks and then be distracted by something else and drop it. I did that initially with CJ Bergmen’s, Sons and Daughters, when it was released last fall and loved it. But this week, I picked it back up and for some reason, it sounded 100 times better than the first. Read more

Giving in to Facebook

May 16, 2008

I joined Facebook today. I feel ashamed and dirty. Its not because EVERYONE I know has it, but because I saw Kerry and Michelle’s Flair and I was hooked. I am sucker for shiny, colorful digitalized trinkets that subtly declare the various avenues of my complex personality to anyone who will listen. Now I just have to fight off the Twitter craze.

Great Debate: Illegals

May 13, 2008

I live in Arizona. I am white. I am a Christian. I should be one who is “fed up” with illegal immigration. I should be panicked and alarmed at how open the U.S. border with Mexico is. I should be pissed that “my taxes” pay for the education and health care of people who don’t deserve to be here. I should assume every poor person with brown skin is an illegal. I should laugh when my peers make illegal jokes.

Ministry on Zero

May 12, 2008

I think we have told all the important people and secret is fully out of the bag now. Its a long story, but starting July 1 of this year (3 months from now), our student ministry of about 300+ high school and junior high students will have an annual budget of exactly $0.00. SSCC isn’t hurting for dough and we aren’t getting punished, we just decided as a stu-min staff that we want to teach our students the necessity and importance of tithe and we want to put our theory to the test that you don’t need a church budget line to do excellent student ministry.
