Beijing Bling Bling

August 9, 2008

I DVR’d and watched the opening ceremony for the 2008 Olympic games in Beijing, China last night.

First off, let me say that I find it both interesting and hilarious how polarizing these Olympic games are. I have yet to meet some one who is willing to admit that they are looking forward to watching some of the worlds finest athletes compete over the next 17 days. I am one of the only people I know who feels this way. Mostly, I have met people who either A) genuinely don’t care or don’t have time, B) think they sound cool to say they don’t care about the Olympics, or C) are actually not watching the games because of some sort of protest against communism. Which one are you?

I am aware of and disturbed by China’s long record of grotesque human rights violations and the oppressive history attached to the current state government. But if you really want to show your anger at China for these things and for showing the world communism might actually work, then STOP SHOPPING AT WAL-MART. No one will notice that you’re TV isn’t tuned in. No one cares. But a LARGE sum of products that US consumers “can’t live with out” are made in China… if you really want to boycott something to induce change, then change your consuming habits.

Ok, for those of you who didn’t get to catch the opening ceremonies, let me just say it was one of the most spectacular things I have ever seen on TV. There were several times that my highly technical brain was actually stumped on how they pulled it off. If you get a chance, watch it. If you can’t find the vid online, here are some pics:

    Nick,

Yo.. I tried watching the opening ceremony.. but I missed the beginning part and when I tuned in it was the marching of all the countries.. dont get me wrong was cool.. but after seeing 20 countries walk in.. umm I was a little bored.. not to mention my head was bobbing up and down because I was so tired..

But I enjoy watching the Olympics.. I enjoy all the track stuff and swimming.

yeah, I watched the marching of the USA, Iraq, Iran, Malawi, and Jamaica but FFWD the rest.. that was the most boring part of the whole deal. Glad to hear someone else likes the O games too, Adam.

I normally enjoy watching the Olympics. I’ll catch what I can of this one. I’m not real big on the whole protest deal. I think we should support our athletes (you know, our tribe’s warriors :) and just hope they whoop their red tails. Sort of like J. Owens running all over the “master race” right in front of the fuhrer. Good stuff.

But I really just don’t have time to tune in. I’ll read the headlines and say a mental woohoo.

Got something to say?
