Pray

October 14, 2008

I normally don’t do posts like this but my heart was broken this morning when I stopped by Adam’s blog and read about the Heintz family and the loss of their 4-year old daughter, Ally. Please remember to pray for them this week as they are coping with loss of their sister and daughter.

My Oldest Boy

October 9, 2008

Today, he turns 6 years old. I want to tell you about him.

His name is Jake. He was a surprise first baby and was born a year and a half after Mandy and I were married (never could figure out birth control). He is a son, grandson, nephew, cousin, big brother, friend, and teammate.

He is incredibly creative. He could spend hours building things, coloring, learning and creating. We are the same in many ways like this. He is sensitive. He makes us read him a story each night before bed… it would violate our routine if we didn’t.

He loves to make people laugh, it is his calling. He cares too much what people think about him, but he’s working on it. He is a real kid with real struggles who isn’t ashamed to admit that he doesn’t know EXACTLY how to pray. He is the only kindergartner at his school with a South African flag on his backpack because it reminds him how blessed he is and that he can help others with his life.

He loves his family and would do ANYTHING if it meant we could all do it together.

He is my big boy and I am proud to be his daddy.

I really have no idea what I am doing as a father, but I know that God did 6 years ago when He placed Jake in my arms. I can only hope that Jake grows up assured of two things: His Father loves him more than anything and so does his dad.

Happy Birthday, Jake!

Album Title Speech

August 28, 2008

Here’s a game to play with a friend or unsuspecting co-worker. The way it works is you pick someone and ONLY communicate with them using album titles from bands or artists. Its real fun when you talk with someone who knows its going on and can play back.

But I tried it today with my son, Jake, and he had no idea what was happening… he is in kindergarten. Here’s how our convo went this morning:

Jake: “What can we have for breakfast? I’m hungry.”

Me: “Chocolate Starfish and Hot Dog Flavored Water” (Limp Bizkit)

Jake: “What? That’s gross.”

Me: “Well, Times They are a Changin’” (Bob Dylan)

Jake: “Gees, dad, can’t we just have some cereal?”

Me: “Definately, Maybe.” (Oasis)

Jake: “Ok, I’ll just get some Fruity Pebbles”

Me: “If You’re Feeling Sinister” (Belle and Sebastian)

Jake (after getting cereal down): “Can you pour my milk so I don’t spill?”

Me: “All it Takes is a Little Confidence” (Carrots)

Jake (now realizing I’m playing a game and didn’t invite him): “What are you doing?! Stop saying those things! Please!”

Me (seeing my 5 year-old’s frustrations, put my arm around him): “The Earth is Not a Cold, Dead Place.” (Explosions in the Sky)

Jake: “Nevermind!” (Nirvana)

Need your help

August 14, 2008

I like it. My wife is threatening to “gain 500 pounds, wear hot pink lipstick, and never kiss you again” if I don’t shave it. What do you think?

How blessed are you?

August 11, 2008

Here’s my answer.

I have an amazing woman as my wife who loves me and I never doubt it. I have two great kids who also think I am pretty cool… normally. I have a great job that pays me to serve my God and do what I love. I work at a church that allows me to grow and think and learn and be challenged. I have friends who like me despite knowing all my faults. God provides for my family financially and we never go with our needs unmet. I have eternal, abundant life because Jesus Christ forever changed human history 2000 years ago. Ultimately, my hope is in the One who is greater.

This will test you

Read this story, then come back here and post.

How do you feel?

As a father, I am scared at how easily my own young boys can become fatherless. As a husband, I saddened to think of his widow. As a follower of Christ, I am disturbed at the hatred inside me that I feel for these ignorant thugs. As a human, I am reminded that I am capable of the same brutality and am no less in need of a savior than these two.
