Great Debates: Capital Christ
April 29, 2008
I am starting a new section on Rethynk where users can debate issues and opinions in a peaceful, non-personal, way. I think discussing theological things, as well as social and political, is good for everyone… it keeps us sharp and our opinions sound. I have learned a lot over the years through this medium. So, be sure to watch for the Great Debates every-so-often.
First, I want to pick up a discussion I have been having lately with people a lot. Is Christianity, by its very nature, opposed to capitalism? What would Jesus say about the “get whats mine” and “everyman for himself” philosophies that underly the American brand of economics and governing? Do you find it interesting that the “Christian nation” (America) is also the “capitalist nation” ? Let’s get it on!

Sorry, this one seems pretty clear to me. I have a hard time picking up any support from the gospels concerning capitalism. This is in direct contrast to the Acts 2 example and never have I ever heard Jesus suggest that we “get what is ours” or “take care of yourself first, then you can help others with your extra resources”. Unfortunatly we only know this system, so for the church to stand up and denounce the idea of capitalism would be “unpatriotic” (which is another issue) so we do not stand up to the “man”.
ok, so then how does a Christian, who believes this, live and prosper in America? Are we living in sin? That is the second part to the question.
