No human is “illegal”

August 18, 2008

… because God says we are created in His image, and the Declaration of Independence says that all men are created equal. So then why, in this “God-fearing” nation is THIS allowed to happen?

As Christians, why is it so easy for us to ignore volumes of Scripture about caring for aliens?

As Christians, why do we selectively choose which US laws are okay for us to break and which ones aren’t?

To put it simpler than it should be, illegal imigration is like you waiting in line at disney world for hours to ride your favorite ride and at the last minute 10 people jump infront of you and then they close the ride. There are people who have waited patiently for years to enter the US from other countries and are being held up because of the illegal situation. Because of our laws and what we provide legal immigrants we can’t absorb the crush to our infrastructure of having an open boarder so we have laws and yes it is illegal to go into a soverign country without their permission. Scripture also says to give unto Cesar what is Cesars, to obey those in authority over you, to serve your masters in every way and on and on. You may think we pick and choose laws to enforce, the same applies to scripture. I say work on your own life and what you want it to reflect.

Fred, thanks for posting. I echo your statement to “work on your own life” and feel that goes without saying. Still, my point remains that many American Christians talk often about our “christian” nation and point to Scripture when breaking “unjust” laws that go against their faith (ie visit link in op). But when it comes to the immigration laws in the US (which are shady and outdated at best), we MUST honor and respect those and “give to Cesar” etc etc. I have heard it all before and I am only asking for consistency. If we are to “obey those in authority over us” than stop protesting abortion clinics and going to jail for disturbing the peace.

The volume of Scripture says over and over to love the aliens among us and remember that we are aliens in this world. I think the immigration system in the US and the way “illegals” are treated is TOTALLY unjust and unChristlike. It is a system driven by fear and hatred, not love and reason.

Nick I agree with you on the abortion protests etc., however, open boarders without respect to diligence in who is allowed in is like taking the locks off the doors to your home. I say if you really feel that strongly let the homeless know that your home is their home. You probably wouldn’t out of respect for the obligation you have to your wife and family to be diligent about whom you give access to them. I know it is the same with my country.

Yanni.. I deleted your post because it was offensive, rude, inappropriate, unChristlike, judgemental, off-topic and ANONYMOUS. If you want to speak truth to my life, make sure you A) know me and B) don’t do it anonymously. Have a nice day.

I’ve tried to comment twice now and I’ve been unsuccessful, let’s see if this one takes.

I responded to this post with a post of my own, rather than write a four page comment… like I normally would.

As Christians we should absolutely be kind and loving to aliens among us. As Americans we should expect them to honor our laws like anyone else.

@Keith Thanks for the succinct thoughts… I think where the simple disagreement is the dichotomy between following Christ’s teachings and America’s laws. In the case of immigration, I feel an uncomfortable conflict between Christ’s words and America’s laws.

@Yanni - once again, your post was deleted because how I live my life is between me and my God and has NOTHING to do with illegal immigration whatsoever. Your argument was an attempt to change an impersonal discussion about politics into a “holier than thou” finger pointing festival that did not work. Once again, I have friends and family who I walk with on my journey who have every right to question my life and how I live it and challenge my opinions on things. You are not one of them. I deleted your comments not because I was convicted by them but because I am tired of Christians using hyper-spirituality to judge others and win debates… I’m sure as heck not going to let it happen on my blog. It does not work with me and I think it is the exact opposite of Christ. FYI, Christ did break the law the second he claimed to be God’s Son. I do read and study and love God’s Word, but be careful when you tell other people to read it “word for word” and not pick and choose, because you did that EXACT thing in your first comment.

Back to my original post, for Christians, some laws of the land need to and should be challenged at all times. I think that this is one of them.

    Nick
you may delete this without reading but I ask you not to.

I took the time to read yours and after the initial shock at your reaction want to just let you know that with reflecing on your response and after sundays message you have something against me and I need to apologize for offending you. I did not point fingers (re-read what I originally wrote) but you saw that I did, so for that I apologize. I tried mearly to point out that before you rail on Christians who believe that the laws of immigration need to be upheld, not treating people in a mean way, but not tolerating the illegal act. Before any of us do that we need to be sure our own personal lives are above reproach….I was not accusing you of anything and that’s why I was shocked at your reponse.

I hope you take this in the manner of which it was intented and find it in your heart to forgive the unintentional offense.

I will not debate on Jesus breaking laws…I do not believe he did, that would have made him sinful.

God bless you today and in your work.

    Yanni

@Yanni- Thanks for clearing things up. I too, apologize if I overreacted towards your comments. I have nothing against you and as a brother, I hope God blesses you today as well.

Got something to say?
