Summer Camp Blog: TWO
July 8, 2008
The first full camp day is behind us and at times today it felt like Thursday. Thanks to one of my staff and his trusty “magic pills” that give you energy, I was able to push on… he assures me they aren’t narcotics.
I began the day with a Starbucks run for my staff (my treat) and then sneaking in the back to breakfast… I think the Hume staff are on to my back door entry to meals because a “do not enter” sign went up this afternoon. Bummer. The worship band debuted in the morning and I was my usual, cynical self when it comes to this topic (insert soon-to-follow blog rant here).
Rec was rec.
Free time was nap time.
After dinner, I was able to have a great convo with one of the Hume staff regarding Rob Bell and Mark Driscoll. Adam and I both agreed that we, together, have a lot more to offer Christendom than either of these knuckleheads so the dispute between them is immaterial at best. I used the music time to call my wife and then came in to listen to Chris perform the easy task of teaching junior high students the doctrine of man in 30 minutes. Evening worship was followed by small group time and then a game of “throw the tennis ball down the dorm hall and try and hit a seventh-grader” and the evening ended with a few of my guys exploring the wonderful tool known as PhotoBooth and effects. (see pics)
So far, I am struck by two things at this camp. First, this camp seems to have more guys walking around bowl-legged from severe chaffing than previous camps. Maybe there is something in the sand this year, but lets just say today is a good day to buy Gold Bond stock. Second, I am saddened by how many kids are on meds. I am not talking about the backup inhalers and allergy meds, I am talking about the problem that exists when a student tells me, “I need this pill or else you won’t be able to get me to obey the rules.” Some students at this camp are on more daily meds than a 75 year-old chemo patient and they are convinced that they can not function with out them. I have no response to this at present but I am working on it.
Tomorrow is a new day and I will have a new Blogthruabook post in the afternoon. N. T. Wright is abusing me so far this week.
